History of JD Auto Collision

 John Doerfler started JD Auto Collision in 1975 and was soon after given the nickname “JD” by his employees.

 At a young age John inherited a love of automobiles from his “Granddaddy Fox”.   Mr. Fox had an automotive repair shop and at that time owned the only heavy duty wreckers in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.  John’s favorite thing to do was visit his granddad and ride in one of his wreckers or hang out in his grandad’s garage.  By the time John was a teenager he was either tinkering in his parent’s garage or assisting a man down the street with his racecar.   He bought his first car when he was seventeen – a black ‘57 Chevy that entertained him for hours and later a black ’55 Chevy that he took to college.  John’s knowledge of collision repairs began the summer after his first year of college when he worked in the body shop at Knapp Chevrolet.  

 After graduating from college a friend asked John to paint his small fleet of trucks used in his air-conditioning & heating company.  John planned to look for employment along with taking care of his friend’s fleet.  Before long John was asked to repair and paint a variety of vehicles for several more people.  He didn’t have enough space in the three-car garage he was currently using so he rented a small warehouse on Steffani Lane.  That move proved to be the decision that changed his career path.  Within a couple of months he started hiring employees and within two years he moved the business to a larger facility directly across the street from his first little warehouse and went on to develop JD Auto Collision for what it is today.   John still has his same love of cars and usually keeps one or two classics around for Sunday drives.  And yes, it seems the disease is catching.  John’s son has inherited the same love and who knows where that path might lead.

Defensive driving is designed to heighten your awareness of everything happening around you while driving.
If you start developing these habits early and realize that every time you get in a car there is risk involved, you increase your chances that you won't be involved in a collision.
Start practicing now by checking your mirrors constantly.
Always be aware of what is on your right, your left and behind you.
Check the road ahead. What is on the horizon, what is happening in front of the car ahead of you.
Learn to make eye to eye contact with drivers and pedestrians. That way you know they see you.
Look at the front wheels of the cars parked on the side of the road. If you see a car with the wheels turned to the left, is it going to suddenly pull out?
Of course you can also just drive around in a daze, fool with the radio, use the mirrors for checking your hair etc. and the rest of us will pay for it with higher insurance rates, but you may pay with your life.
Speed is regulated by two things:
1)    Law (the posted speed limit) and
2)    Common sense (you)
The posted speed limit tells you how fast you are allowed to drive under ideal conditions.
Rain, fog, sleet, snow, etc. are not ideal conditions.
Common sense tells you how fast you should be driving.
Speed limits are not absolute. You must adjust your speed if conditions require it.

Food Is More Dangerous To Drivers Than Cell Phones

Columbus, Ohio -- There's been a lot of talk about the dangers of chatting on a cell phone while driving, but a new study finds that eating behind the wheel is even worse.  "The study shows that it's dangerous to eat food while you're driving, and more so than actually using a cell phone," said Susan Stewart, a AAA spokeswoman.

AAA funded the study, and according to Stewart, there are other distractions even higher on the list:  Of the estimated 284,000 distractions that cause serious accidents, the following topped the list:
1.   Outside vehicle distractions            29.4 %
2.   Radio or CD player                           11.4 %
3.   Talking in car                                    10.9 %
4.   Climate adjusting                              2.8 %
5.   Eating and drinking                          1.7 %
6.   Cell phone use                                   1.5 %

 Columbus television station WCMH reported that many drivers were surprised eating in the car caused more accidents than talking on cell phones.  "I notice a lot of people on cell phones that are totally distracted and it's scary," Gary Filko, a driver said.  Filko said that he sees no problem with eating in a car as long as it's not moving.  "I find myself not eating and driving that much. I usually will wait for a traffic light," Filko said.  Stewart said that she knows that may be difficult for some especially in this "do more with less time world" we live in.  She said regardless, distractions no matter what the cause, have no place behind the wheel.

Twenty-four foot wide streets are the safest, according to a study by Swift and Associates and the City of Longmont, Colorado. The study, Residential Street Typology and Injury Accident Frequency, looked at 20,000 automobile accident reports over an eight year period in Longmont, and examined fire department records. This data was correlated by street and 13 variables. “The most significant casual relationships to injury and accident were found to be street width and street curvature,” according to the report. “The analysis illustrates that as street width widens, accidents per mile per year increases exponentially, and that the safest residential street width is 24 feet (measured from curb face).”   “This study is not definitive,” the authors conclude. “Additional research must be accomplished to build the body of knowledge related to such an important safety issue.”   Some of the most dangerous streets turned out to be wide thoroughfares, 36 feet to 44 feet, with relatively light traffic (less than 500 ADT). A future study would do well to correlate ADT more closely to street widths and accident rates.

1.  If possible move your vehicle away from oncoming traffic. 
2.           Turn off ignition.
3.           If vehicle is not moveable get out of your vehicle and stand out of the way of all traffic.  Do not stand between vehicles.
4.           Call 911 if anyone is injured or if gas is leaking from a vehicle.
5.           Make sure no one is smoking at the scene of the accident.
6.           Carry a camera in your glove box and take photos of the accident scene.
7.           Obtain the following information:
·        Name, address, and phone numbers of other parties
·        License plate number and driver’s license number
·        Insurance Company, policy number and insurance company phone number
·        Description of all vehicles involved (make, year, model, color)
·        Name and phone number of any witnesses
8.    When providing information to another party at the scene of a accident, it is best to provide a work phone number and a work address. 
9.           Be sure to record the date and time of the accident, road conditions, weather conditions, and the location of the accident.
10.       Call your insurance company or the other party’s insurance company as soon as possible to make a claim.
11.       Make sure you have rental car coverage on your insurance policy.  It is not expensive and you will enjoy the convenience of having transportation while your vehicle is being repaired.
12.       Take your vehicle to a reliable shop for repairs.
